For the past two seasons, the Boca Grande Farmers Market set up at The Bayou near the Pink Elephant while Wheeler Road Community Park was renovated. On Friday, Nov. 20, it moves back to 305 Wheeler Road, according to the Boca Beacon. Several other island gatherings are also back at a permanent address after the hurricane years, or about to be, and the Community Center campus on First Street now moves into its next phase of construction.
So this month is about putting things back where they belong. The repairs after Helene and Milton are largely finished. The building that comes next has its beam-signing in the same weeks the market comes home.
Five dates that set the season
- Thursday, Nov. 5, 3 to 5 p.m. The Boca Grande Historical Society opens its season and invites the public to visit its exhibit room.
- Tuesday, Nov. 10. Friends of Boca Grande presents Sweet Fleet: The Fleetwood Mac Experience.
- Friday, Nov. 13, 11 a.m. Lee County holds a ribbon-cutting at Wheeler Road Community Park to mark its 2026 improvements on the island.
- Thursday, Nov. 19, 10 a.m. Friends holds "Leave Your Mark," a beam-signing ceremony for the new performing arts theater, at the Friends Pavilion, 131 First St.
- Friday, Nov. 20. The farmers market opens its 2026–27 season back on Wheeler Road.
Back at their own addresses
The hurricane years moved more than the market. Here is where things stood while repairs were underway and where they are now.
| Gathering | Where it was during repairs | Where it is now |
|---|---|---|
| Boca Grande Farmers Market | The Bayou, near the Pink Elephant | Wheeler Road Community Park, 305 Wheeler Road, from Nov. 20 |
| Historical Society History Center | Closed to the public from Oct. 1, 2024 | Crowninshield Community House, 240 Banyan Street |
| Tennis and pickleball at Wheeler Road | Two worn-out tennis courts, then construction | Two new tennis courts plus three pickleball courts, open since June |
The market's return is the most visible of these. The park it comes back to also looks quite different from the one it left. Lee County's Oct. 23 announcement lists new parking spaces, sidewalks, fencing, lighting, shade structures and an extra restroom at Wheeler Road. The shade structures inside the fenced Boca Grande Dog Park were also repainted. In August the county added an emergency response cabinet near the courts with an Avive AED and a Stop the Bleed kit.
Parking at the park is free for the Nov. 13 ceremony. The county suggests anyone planning to visit other places on the island that day check its Boca Grande parking information first. If you can't attend, the ceremony will stream on Lee County's YouTube channel.
Market mornings also bring a new regular. The Johann Fust Community Library now has a Book Bike, donated by the Triad Foundation. Lee County says it will carry books, library card sign-ups, simple crafts and mobile technology to the bike path, the farmers market and community events.
Crowninshield House does double duty
The Historical Society's move is not new this season. Its exhibit room at Crowninshield Community House opened to the public on Nov. 12, 2025, after storm damage closed its old History Center at the Teacherage, 131 Park Avenue, a year earlier. The Nov. 5 opener is the first full winter season that starts with the Society already settled at 240 Banyan Street.
According to the Historical Society's visitor page, the exhibit is called "Footprints from the Past." It has an interactive map and games, a section on the island's Black communities and their contributions, and an archive of more than 70 topical research notebooks. The archive is open to residents, visitors, students and researchers, and you can arrange time with the Archivist ahead of a visit. Posted hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from October through July, and Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in August and September.
Lee County lists the building's own repairs among its 2026 improvements. Hurricane damage was fixed, a restroom was added, and the full interior renovation was designed for the Historical Society and for continued use by Boca Grande residents. That second use matters this winter. The Friends' 2026–27 program guide spreads performances across the Auditorium, Crowninshield Community House and the Friends Pavilion, and one concert is set at Crowninshield on Jan. 25.
The Society's former home is changing too. The Boca Beacon reported in November 2025 that the county-owned Teacherage was being restored for future use as Boca Bargains.
First Street becomes a work site again
The Community Center building finished its own hurricane recovery this year. Lee County describes repairs and extensive renovations there. All electrical and data systems were replaced and moved overhead, restroom plumbing was replaced, and the floors were raised and refinished. Outside, a new sidewalk connects to side-street parking, and there are drainage and landscaping improvements and new golf-cart parking. The Island School next door gained its own lunchroom, more office space and a fire sprinkler system.
With that work finished, the next project begins. The Community Center of Boca Grande's planning materials place a 242-seat theater at the southeast corner of the campus, north of the Island School. It will sit where the existing multipurpose room stands, and the current auditorium is planned to become multipurpose and fitness space once the theater is built. The campus post-hurricane roadmap, dated September 2025, gives an estimated window of May 2026 through May 2027 for tearing down the multipurpose room and building the theater, with Stevens Construction as the builder. The roadmap says all of its timeframes and scopes are estimates.
The Friends describe the Nov. 19 beam-signing as "marking the beginning of construction." Guests can sign a ceremonial beam before it is placed in the structure, and the event thanks the project's Renaissance Donors. The ceremony is the first public milestone on that site.
In the meantime, the Friends' fall schedule continues. "Understanding Western Art: Stories, Styles, and Masterworks" meets Thursdays and Fridays from Nov. 5 through Dec. 18. The Friends' Grande Chorus rehearses and performs at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, with its first performances Dec. 11 and 12 at 5 p.m. and the next set Feb. 19 and 20.
The rest of the island's short list
Several smaller changes also affect a November week on the island.
- Boca Grande Health Clinic. The clinic's new building opened to patients in May with laboratory services, CT and X-ray. In November it adds on-island ultrasound. Dr. John C. Porter, D.O., became medical director on Oct. 15, and women's health nurse practitioner Lylian Hermann started Nov. 2. Ultrasound technologist Mindy Hoskins joins this month to launch the new service, which the clinic's announcement says will reduce some trips off the island.
- Sisters Restaurant. The Boca Beacon reported in mid-October that Sisters is open for the season for lunch and dinner at 480 E. Railroad Ave.
- Gasparilla Island State Park. Since Oct. 5, 2026, the Dunes lot has used a remote off-grid kiosk that takes credit and debit cards, while the park's other lots still use QR-code or website payment. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse Museum is listed as open. The park at 880 Belcher Road is open from 8 a.m. to sunset year-round.
- Belcher Road. Lee County replaced the damaged guardrail with boulders to keep vehicles off the beach and resurfaced the turnaround. The county says the new turnaround lets drivers turn around without backing into homeowners' driveways.
- The Gasparilla Inn & Club. The Inn's event calendar lists a Wellbeing Experience Nov. 8 through 10, Thanksgiving holiday events starting Nov. 25 and its Twelve Days of Christmas starting Dec. 19.
All of these are close together. The Historical Society on Banyan Street, the Friends Pavilion and Community Center on First Street, Sisters on East Railroad Avenue and Wheeler Road Community Park are all in the village. One Friday in late November could cover the market at Wheeler Road in the morning, the exhibit room at Crowninshield, and a look at the theater site on First Street, where the signed beam will be part of the new building.
At The Nix Team, we follow how projects like the Wheeler Road park and the First Street theater change everyday life on Gasparilla Island, because those details matter to the people who live there.
